In this episode of Not an Alien, Robert recounts his immigration journey from his home in Trinidad to the United States. A love of horses brought him to Indiana to complete formal studies towards the goal of becoming a horse trainer; however, when it proved difficult to find gainful employment in his chosen field and finding himself not entirely at home in middle America, he relocated to Brooklyn where he already had a number of friends, and has continued to reside there since. Peppered with keen observations about the state of the world and heartfelt reflections on life, Robert’s interview offers insights into the challenges of cultural dislocation and making ends meet in New York City, while also offering reminders of the freedoms and opportunities that draw so many people to the United States in general, and New York in particular.
