In this episode of Not an Alien, Luke tells the story of her immigration journey from Jakarta to the Bay Area as a high school student, and sheds light on the procedural and personal hardships that making that journey alone entailed. Owing to stipulations related to her I-20, for nine years, she was not able to return home to Indonesia. Now married and living with her husband and their adorable son in Brooklyn, Luke is thankful to have a green card, but continues to feel that her heart is always in two places. Seeing no clear resolution to that conundrum in the near-term, she has worked to build a “bi-continental” life and consciousness that allows her to live between her two homes.
